Can you get to Las Vegas from Illinois without going over mountains?
ragmop asked:
We live in southern illinois and don’t want to drive over mountains.
Is that possible when we want to drive to Las Vegas? We think it is difficult to drive some road in Lake Geneva, Il.

You would have to cross the Rocky Mountains T.J.

Rocky Mountains, Wasatch Mountains, and probably others.
I suppose you can drive all the way down to the Gulf Coast, and the along the coast and come up through Arizona. But now that I think of it, you’d have to drive through the mountains of Northern Arizona.
Sorry, you’re SOL. Vince M

You have to go through the Rocky Mountains or go all the way down to Arizona and then you will hit hilled areas in the desert and a small mountain area near NV. banananose_89117

Las Vegas is in a large valley completely surrounded by mountains. Not to mention that you have to drive through the Rockies to get to Nevada from Illinois. shoredude2

Jeez people it’s not big of a deal
You have three possible routings and Yes I have personally driven all of them
1)The most 3D
I-80 W >I-76W >I-70W >I-15
Flat and fast until you reach Golden CO on I-70
Then uphill to Eisenhower Tunnel>Steep downhill to Glenwood Springs CO & slightly downhill But otherwise fast to the St George UT on I-15
Then
Steeply descend the always awesome Virgin River Gorge
Once you reach Mesquite NV it’s very flat and very fast all the way to Las Vegas
2)I-80 W to I-15S
Flat and fast all the way thru IL>IA>NE >WY
Unless you’re actually looking at the
sign , you won’t notice that you’ve crossed the Continental Divide in WY>[ The same thing applies to the I-40 crossing of the CD in NM ]
When you get into UT you will have to do a rather steep and twisty descent of Echo Canyon on I-80 until you reach the jct of I-80 & I-215 and then it’s flat and fast until you reach the aforementioned Virgin River Gorge
3)I-55S>I-44W >I-40 W >US 93 N
Flat until you reach St Charles NM on I-40 W
Steep downhill to the Rio Grande River @ Albuquerque NM
Gradual uphill climb to the I-40 AZ Exit 178
Steepish descent to Ash Fork AZ
Flat and very fast until you begin the descent to Hoover Dam
Laborious uphill from the dam to about 5 miles east of boulder city and flat going into Las Vegas
Safe trip mr danger
