After the NBA AllStar game, the league said Thomas and Mack Center was not NBA ready. Las Vegas is an "event" town, not a sports town. There are too many people who like the Dodgers, Lakers, and Raiders to throw support to a major team, hence why they have the UFL. It is also hard to attract visitors to a game when they are there to gamble. That leaves locals as your target. Last year, Delaware passed a law allowing sports gambling. All four sports leagues said Delaware would never get a team (like there was a chance anyway). The NCAA said that if a Delaware team made the playoffs they would have to play on the road, as no college playoff games would be allowed in the state of Delaware. Also before Toronto got its basketball team, Ontario had to outlaw betting on basketball. None of the 4 major sports leagues would ever allow a team in Nevada, unless it outlawed sports gambling. They are still in a negotiation with the government people on land use and stadium development and revenue sharing. Honestly, I live here and we do not need a pro team. I come from NYC and pro teams are nice but they do not generate that much revenue for the state, city and county. In fact, the team owners get a sweetheart deal unusually pay no or little tax. What is the point, have the tax payers foot the bill. Look at Yankee Stadium and City Field, both cost tax payers money to support the construction. The Meadowlands in E. Rutherford is dying and there is a new arena in Newark, NJ and the tenants pay no or little income. What is up with that. So, we do not need a free ride team out here. This is a and a pro team will not really enhance tourism. Gambling is what Vegas is all about. They probably feel that "fixing" a game would be more of a problem in Vegas than other cities in that the city survives in odds making. We have minor league sports teams which do not have the betting like the major divisions. So people who live here care about sports? Yes they do. With the gigantic blend of people from all over the US and the world, there is a great following of their home town teams. Many local bars have home team gatherings when their teams are playing. So it isn't the local government not wanting, they have tried for years.
